Recipe for good sugar cake with honey

One of these honey sponge cake recipes also includes glühwein – a spicy German wine that is usually served hot. If you don’t drink alcohol, you can remove it from the recipe because the sponge cake can be made without it.

Today we are sharing a recipe for sugar cake with honey, which has a golden, soft appearance. This sponge cake is suitable for any occasion, formal or informal.

Another great thing about this cake is that it is easy to make.

You can substitute any ingredients you want to make it fit your diet (that is, with the exception of honey, its main ingredient ).

Vegetable milk instead of dairy products, for example, means that the cake contains fewer calories and gets a more emphasized honey taste.

But since milk contains about 3% fat, cakes with it will be stronger, denser, and moister.

As for spices, the ones this recipe calls for are aromatic. Note that some people add a little more ginger to enhance the flavor of this honey sponge cake. You can fine-tune it according to your taste.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with spices in desserts, because the result will be delicious, regardless!

Sugar cake with honey

Ingredients

  • The juice from an orange
  • 335 g of honey
  • ½ tsk salt
  • 1 pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 tsp cloves
  • 500 g of flour
  • 4 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 2 tbsp baking powder
  • 7 1/2 dl vegetable drink or milk
  • ½ tsp anise seeds
  • Optional: fresh orange juice, raisins, nuts (whole or powdered)
  • Vegetable oil (as needed)

Preparation

  • First, preheat the oven to 180ºC.
  • Cut the orange and set it aside.
  • Then place the dry ingredients in a bowl (not the orange) and stir until smooth.
  • Then make a hole in the center of the bowl to pour the liquid ingredients there; i.e. the milk and honey (if you choose the glühwein version, now is the time to add it. See instructions below.)
  • Then add the juice from the orange and continue mixing all the ingredients with a hand mixer to get a smooth mixture and remove any lumps.
  • Let the cake mix rest for 15 minutes at room temperature, so that the ingredients mix and acquire a spicy, intense, pleasant aroma.
  • Then grease a cake tin with vegetable oil and pour the mixture into it. Using a spoon or spatula, distribute the mixture evenly.
  • Place in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes. When the surface is raised and golden, poke a fork or toothpick into it. If it comes out clean, the cake is ready. If not, bake for another 10 minutes. Repeat the process until it is done.
  • When it’s done, take it out and let it cool at room temperature, covered with a clean, dry cloth (not near a heat source).
  • While the cake is still warm, carefully invert it onto a tray and let it cool for at least 10 minutes.
  • Now that the honey sponge cake is ready to serve, sprinkle some orange peel on top of it. You can also add some orange slices on the side.

A German twist

This is a German recipe, but it is also common in other countries, such as France and Belgium. However, the original recipe calls for glühwein.

Ingredients for mulled wine

  • 2 bay leaves
  • 5 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • The peel of 1 lemon
  • The peel from 1 orange
  • 7 1/2 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp ginger
  • 3 glasses of red wine or mulled wine

Preparation

  • First, place a saucepan over low heat, then add the wine. Do not let it boil.
  • Add the spices and stir constantly with a spoon.
  • Then add the sugar and stir occasionally until it dissolves completely.
  • After that, strain the liquid and set it aside.
  • Prepare sugar cake with honey according to the recipe above, but this time add glühwein after step number four.

Sugar cake with honey is a fairly simple recipe and yet a very popular dessert thanks to its delicious taste.

Generally, this cake is not decorated, but you can add a layer of dark chocolate or sprinkle some cocoa or powdered sugar on it; you can also garnish it with nuts, seeds, or dried fruit.
